January 1, 2017

As we stand on the threshold of this New Year, I am going to share two messages from one of my favorite devotionals called God Calling and God at Eventide. It seems to me I did this before, so maybe it’s becoming a tradition. I think they’re very encouraging, inspiring, and consoling.

December 31 – For New Year’s Eve

Bring to Me this eventide the past year with its sins, its failures, its lost opportunities.

Leave that past with Me, your Savior today as ever, and go into the New Year forgiven, unladen, free.

Bring to Me your youth or age, your powers, your love — and I, as your God-guide through the year to come, will bring My agelessness, My powers, My love.

So shall we share the burdens and the joys, and the work of the days that lie ahead.

January 1 – Between the Years

Our Lord and our God. We joy in Thee. Without Thy Help we could not face unafraid the year before us.

I stand between the years. The Light of My Presence is flung across the year to come – the radiance of the Sun of Righteousness. Backward, over the past year, is My Shadow thrown, hiding trouble and sorry and disappointment.
Dwell not on the past – only on the present. Only use the past as the trees use My Sunlight to absorb it, to make from it in after days the warming fire-rays. So store only the blessings from Me, the Light of the World. Encourage yourselves by the thought of these.

Bury every fear of the future, of poverty for those dear to you, of suffering, of loss. Bury all thought of unkindness and bitterness, all your dislikes, your resentments, your sense of failure, your disappointment in others and in yourselves, your gloom, your despondency, and let us leave them all, buried, and go forward to a new and risen life.

Remember that you must not see as the world sees.  I hold the year in My Hands – in trust for you. But I shall guide you one day at a time.

Leave the rest with Me. You must not anticipate the gift by fears or thoughts of the days ahead.

And for each day I shall supply the wisdom and the strength.

I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  John 8:12

I believe most of you know about our patroness, Saint Philomena. If you don’t know, her story is on our website. Check it out. We think it’s very interesting.

Philomena’s birthday is coming up on Tuesday, January 10. As I told you earlier, Mrs. Loewe, our principal is retiring and we should have a novena to our saint asking for her assistance in finding a new principal. Philomena has a track record here. She assisted us at St. Joseph School in Howell some years back under some very special circumstances. There’s no reason she wouldn’t help us here, and now. So I’ve composed a new novena prayer, specific to our cause. The novena will begin on Monday, January 2nd so as to end on the feastday. We will have a special birthday Mass that evening, and it will be a parish wide event. All are invited. Birthday cake will be served after.

Here is our prayer. Please say it fervently, every day, for nine days. Ideally, say it in a family setting before bedtime.

Dear Saint Philomena, virgin and martyr.

We come to you in love and humility to ask your help in all of our needs, but especially at this time, for help in finding a new principal for our school. We are grateful to God for introducing you to us and giving us all the inspiration that springs from pondering your courage in giving your life to God.

Our little school has prospered under your watchful care, and we thank God, for helping us to get our new school built, and for sending us new students, and for guiding the heart of Mrs. Loewe as she maintained the mission of Catholic Education here at Holy Spirit.

Dearest little sister, daughter of Mary, please now help us in our new task of finding the right person to lead us into the future.  Amen.

  1. Here’s a little something to kick off the new year with. Footings and electrical have been approved for our new sign, and masonry work will start first week of January. The Dove portion will be illuminated in LED and ground spotlights will shine on lower portion. This is located on Winans Lake Road directly in front of the church, a little bit to the East of where the old sign is (that will be removed once the new sign is completed).
